The id is the only component of personality that is present from birth. This aspect of personality is entirely unconscious and includes instinctive and primitive behaviors.

While the ego operates in both the preconscious and conscious, its strong ties to the id means that it also operates in the unconscious.

The conscious mind runs the show only 5% of the time. This leaves the subconscious mind running 95% of what we think. Our thoughts control our feelings and our choices. Therefore, the subconscious mind is the powerful driver in determining our actions and, ultimately, the outcome of our lives.

Freud conceived the id as the unconscious source of bodily needs and wants, emotional impulses and desires, especially aggression and the sexual drive.

Briefly, consciousness defines our thoughts, actions, and awareness. Subconscious is defined as the reactions and actions we realized when we think of it. Unconscious is defined as the deep recesses of our past and memories.

As if the ego's job wasn't hard enough, playing referee between the id and reality, its performance is under constant scrutiny by a relentless judge, the superego. While the ego negotiates with the id, trying to prevent another tantrum, the superego judges the performance. Superego is another name for your conscience.

According to Freud, we all have three voices in our heads: the id, ego and superego. Each of these voices has a different mission. The id seeks pleasure, the superego tries to uphold our highest values, and the ego has to deal with both to find a way to operate in reality.
