So, what is AI copywriting, exactly, and how does it work?

    Let’s take a quick look:

What Is AI Copywriting and How Does It Work?

AI copywriting tools use machine learning and natural language processing to generate copy that fits a particular format, style, and tone.

Machine learning is how artificial intelligence algorithms ‘learn’ by processing massive amounts of data and finding patterns in that data. It then uses that data to generate content that it calculates as being a statistically probable result, based on the inputs given by the person using the software.

Machine learning has allowed AI software to learn how to mimic and produce written content that is remarkably close to natural, human language patterns.

This video by WIRED gives a great explanation of machine learning, how it works and how it is applied:

In computer science, and AI specifically, Natural Language Processing (NLP) combines machine learning, statistical and deep learning models, with computational linguistics.

This combination allows computers to process language, as both voice data and text, to understand it in the same (more or less) way that humans do. They can even discern subtle differences in the language used to determine the speaker’s intention and sentiment.

NLP is used in many computer programs that we use every day. Siri, Alexa, and Google all use NLP to help them understand your spoken instructions. Google translate uses NLP to translate text, and customer service chatbots use NLP to answer your questions.

This video by IBM Technology breaks down the complexity of NLP and its applications:

Right, now that we know more about what AI copywriting is and how it works, let’s look at what AI copywriting tools are, and what they can do for you:

    What Are AI Copywriting Tools?

In the very simplest terms, AI copywriting tools are software applications that allow users to input parameters and text, and then the AI algorithm uses those to understand the context and the format required. From there, it generates content that is relevant to the topic and the context, in the format required.

AI-generated text can be almost anything but most focus on content for content marketing and e-commerce, such as social media posts and ad copy, blog posts, SEO meta descriptions, and product descriptions.

Some of the most sophisticated and widely used tools use OpenAI’s Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3).

GPT-3 is currently the biggest GPT language model available. GPT-3 is a deep learning model, with 175-billion parameter points gathered from massive internet datasets.

    In Layman’s Terms:

GPT-3 has read the internet (a large portion of it, anyway). And it learned a LOT, and now it has a pretty good idea of what you want to write, what you will use that writing for, and how it should be written!

This video by Shifu Digital gives a neat overview of what GPT-3 is and how it works:

There are dozens of easily accessible AI copywriting tools that use GPT-3, and other learning and generation models, to generate content for their users.

Let’s take a look at what AI copywriting tools can do:

What Can AI Copywriting Software Do?

AI copywriting tools are built to generate content for everything from product descriptions, social media captions, and ad copy, to website landing pages and long-form blogs and articles.

The most common features and content types include:

    • Website landing pages, sales pages, and meta descriptions
    • Social media post captions, hashtags, ad copy, bios and video scripts, and titles
    • Blog post titles, outlines, introductions, conclusions, and complete blog posts
    • Article and blog summaries, content expansion, and rephrasing
    • Product descriptions for e-commerce, product features, and benefits lists
    • Email copy for sales emails and email marketing campaigns

Many AI copywriting tools promise to produce high-quality content, that is indistinguishable from content written by humans.

They also promise that it will be grammatically correct, plagiarism-free, and optimized for SEO and sales conversions. All in just minutes, with minimal input from you, and at a fraction of the cost.

So, can you use AI to take care of all your content writing tasks?

We’re not entirely convinced. Copywriting is a complex and nuanced process, that involves a lot more than keywords and readable, ‘human-sounding’ text.

Good copywriting and content marketing are the cornerstones of successful digital marketing, regardless of the channels you’re using or the nature of your business.

With so much riding on your copywriting and the quality of your content, it’s hard to imagine handing it all over to AI, when the risks are so high.

However, the potential rewards, in terms of the promised efficiency, high quality, and low cost, are certainly appealing!

To find out exactly what AI copywriting tools can do, we have tested some of the best premium and free copywriting tools on the market:

How We Tested and Evaluated the Best AI Copywriting Tools

Firstly, we need to consider what creating good copy involves. That will give you a clearer idea of what AI copywriting tools must be capable of to replace a human to generate content for your marketing.

So, what does copywriting involve and what makes for good copy?

The following elements are some of the elements required for a human copywriter to create valuable content:

    • Clear understanding of the purpose of the piece, and how it ties into the broader brand and marketing strategy. This includes relevant brand messaging and values, calls to action, and how the piece can support existing content and other marketing channels.
    • A detailed understanding of the topic, through research and the use of credible and recent/up to date sources. This includes dissenting information, to understand and address any reservations or resistance your readers may have. It also includes the writer using their own discretion as to what to include and what to omit.
    • An understanding of the audience and their needs and desires, their challenges, and the problems that they need to be solved. Beyond features and benefits, this involves a contextually relevant understanding of societal norms, cultural values, and human emotions.
    • A clear message, in the right tone of voice, that flows logically and coherently. Every good piece of content has a narrative that forms and flows through the piece in a natural and contextually relevant way. It has to be simple enough to grasp quickly, and detailed enough to be interesting and useful. It is a fine balance that is difficult to achieve without a nuanced understanding of both the topic and the audience.
    • An original, creative take on the topic, and the ability to draw unique conclusions in the piece. This isn’t always needed but it is often what sets good copy apart, especially when it resonates with the target audience.
    • Nuanced wording, tone, and analogies. Persuasive copy speaks to the target audience in many different ways and the writer’s choice of words can drastically alter the impact of the copy.
    • Blending SEO techniques and human interest. Copy needs to be highly readable for both humans and bots. The best SEO in the world is pointless if the content is not engaging for human readers and the most engaging content is useless if it can’t be found by search engines!

When all these elements come together, in varying degrees, the result is a valuable piece of content. Content that your audience wants to read, that solves their problems, and that meets your marketing needs and is easily indexed by search engines.

As such, good content is not just ‘natural sounding’ words on a page. Nor is it a string of cleverly disguised keywords that are easily indexed by computers but utterly useless to your human readers!

So, can AI copywriters produce good content? Can they produce average content? Usable content?

To find out, we tested and evaluated 11 of the best AI copywriting tools!

Here is how we did that:

How We Tested Them & What We Were Looking For

We chose the AI copywriting software we tested based on their features and positive user reviews scores.

Once we had a selection of the best premium and free AI copywriting tools, we signed up and tested them individually.

The different tools had a wide variety of features and templates so, to keep things simple, we decided to test them all on both short and long-form texts to see what they could produce.

To evaluate them, we looked specifically at the following:

    • Quality of the content generated and how much editing it would need to make it logical, readable, factually correct, and grammatically correct.
    • The number of useful features and functions offered
    • Pricing packages and ‘value for money’
    • Usability of the interface and how much input was needed from us
    • Overall impressions and value of the product

Our main objective was to see what they could produce and how good the quality of the content would be.

We also wanted to see how useful they would be for copywriters, content markers, and e-commerce businesses in a real-world context.

The 11 AI Copywriting Tools We Tested

Here are the tools we tested:

    1. Jasper (formerly Jarvis)
    2. Hypotenuse AI
    3. Writesonic
    4. SEO Content Machine
    5. Writecream
    6. CopyAI
    7. Smart Copy by Unbounce
    8. Copysmith
    9. Rytr
    10. Anyword
    11. AI-Writer

Overall, the AI copywriting tools we tested were quite impressive. The content was readable, and frankly better than a lot of the human-written content you find on the internet. Some of it was even eloquent and compelling to read!

However, most were highly inconsistent, generating as much utter gibberish as usable content.

They were also very inconsistent at picking up the correct context and often generated content that was related to some of the words we had keyed in, but not in the relevant context.

For example, ‘checking and measuring your email sender reputation score’ generated content about manners and how to write polite emails. You can see how they ended up there… but it’s not at all useful or relevant content for your marketing!

On the other hand, some were genuinely useful and generated usable content that didn’t need a great deal of editing. Of all the tools we tested, the following emerged as the best and most useful AI copywriting tools to use:

    5 Best AI Copywriting Tools

    1.Jasper

Jasper (formerly known as Jarvis.ai) is one of the most comprehensive premium AI copywriting tools available. It uses GPT-3 and can generate some pretty impressive content!

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (2)

Japer can create content for just about everything, including:

    • Blogs (from outlines to complete articles)
    • Social media posts, ad copy, and profile bios
    • Product descriptions and features lists for e-commerce
    • Google ads
    • SEO meta descriptions and titles
    • Website copy for landing pages and sales pages

When we tested Jasper, the thing that stood out the most for us was how polished and well-articulated the content sounded!

It wasn’t by any means a piece of content that could be taken and used as-is, but the usable parts sounded really natural and convincing.

This is an excerpt from the blog post on ‘email sender reputation’ that we asked Jasper to write for us:

“There are a number of things you can do to improve your email sender reputation. The most important thing is to focus on delivering high-quality content to your recipients. This means avoiding spammy keywords and phrases, sending emails regularly, and ensuring that your email content is relevant and valuable to your recipients” ~ Excerpt from a blog post by Jasper

    Sounds pretty good, right?!

The other stand out features that we liked included the ability to set the tone of the content, it is available in multiple languages, the content Jasper generates is grammatically correct and unique (we ran it through Grammarly’s plagiarism checker to be sure!), and you can add multiple team members to collaborate on projects within Jasper.

On the downside, we found that Jasper tended to:

    • Repeat itself when producing long-form content, with consecutive paragraphs that were almost identical.
    • Include the odd non-sensical and/or irrelevant paragraph in otherwise logical content
    • Produce very specific statistics and numbers, with no citation or reference so there was no way to check if they were true or not.
    • Embellish content with that wasn’t necessarily true. For example, it added bits about being vegan and cruelty-free to a product description for eco-friendly soap.

However, these issues can be easily remedied when you’re proofing and editing the content.

Overall, we were impressed with the quality of the content Jasper produced. It needed some careful editing and fact-checking, but the content was well-written and compelling.

    Jasper’s Pricing:

    • Free Trial: 5 days (credit card needed)
    • Starter: Flexible monthly pricing, from $29/2 000 words to $499/990 000 words, and custom pricing for 1M+ words per month
    • Boss Mode: Flexible pricing, from $59/50 000 words to $279/290 000 words per month, and custom pricing for 300000+ words per month

    2.Writesonic

Writesonic is another hugely popular GPT-3 based AI copywriting software. Writesonic offers several different tools, as well as content generation.

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (3)

The content types you can create with Writesonic include everything from ad copy, social media posts, and website copy to blog post outlines, SEO meta descriptions, and YouTube video scripts.

The dashboard is organized so that you can choose the type of content you want to create, and then choose from relevant tools and templates.

One of Writesonic’s features that we found particularly useful is Content Rephrase. You can copy any text into it and it will re-word and paraphrase it for you.

This is really useful if you already have something that contains all the facts but doesn’t read well, if you need a re-worded and unique version of the same thing for a product description or if you want to emulate a competitor’s copy without plagiarizing it.

We found that Writesonic worked better for short content, and were particularly pleased with how it generated creative and emotive product descriptions, like this one for an all-natural soap:

“Made with natural ingredients and pure essential oils, Mint and Lime soap bars are vegan, cruelty-free, and contain no SLS, parabens, or palm oil. The combination of peppermint oil and spearmint extract helps to keep your skin feeling refreshed with a cool tingle. These mild soaps are perfect for sensitive skin and the coconut oil helps to gently cleanse the skin by removing excess dirt without over-drying” ~ Product description by Writesonic

On the other hand, we found that Writesonic:

    • Produced inconsistent results, some of which were completely irrelevant
    • The blog outline feature was a bit awkward to use and didn’t let you customise enough at each step in the process.
    • Social media templates were limited to LinkedIn posts and YouTube ideas, outlines, intros and descriptions
    • The number and type of templates were limited.

Overall, Writesonic was easy to use and it generated usable short-form content, which didn’t need a lot of editing to be ready to go.

    Writesonic’s Pricing:

    • Free Trial: 10 credits (no time limit), 1 user seat
    • Basic: $15/month for 100 credits/up to 50 000 words, 1 user seat
    • Professional: $45/month for unlimited credits, 1 user seat
    • Startup: $45/month for unlimited credits, 2 user seats

    Website: writesonic.com

    3.Hypotenuse AI

Hypotenuse AI is one of the best free AI copywriting tools available! It uses NLP and machine learning to generate content, which is focused on three main content categories – product descriptions blog posts and ads, and social media posts.

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (4)

It is very easy to use and the way it is laid out helps you give the right inputs to get the best content from it. It is set out so that generating content is a step-by-step process, with simple inputs and edits along the way.

We found Hypotenuse AI’s blog generator to be one of the best we tried. It produced clear, concise, and, most importantly, relevant content.

It also built the blog post with headings and paragraphs so that the final product was structured and showed a logical progression from introduction to conclusion.

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (5)

Hypotenuse AI gives you options to input more detail than many other AI copywriting tools do, including keywords, categories, and specific audiences. This helps it to produce content that meets your needs and does not need a great deal of editing before you can use it.

On the downside, we found that Hypotenuse AI:

    • Had a limited number of templates and content types to choose from.
    • The level of detail/number of inputs required made it a little more time-consuming to use than some of the other tools we tested

Our overall impression of Hypotenuse AI is that while it doesn’t have a huge number of templates to choose from, the ones it does have work really well.

Their selection covers everything you need (product descriptions, social media posts, ad copy, and blog content) for essential e-commerce and content marketing.

    Hypotenuse AI’s Pricing:

    • Free Trial: 7 Days
    • Starter: $29/month for 75 credits for product descriptions, 20 blog posts, unlimited ad copy
    • Growth: $59/month for 500 credits for product descriptions, unlimited blog posts, unlimited ad copy
    • Enterprise: Custom pricing for unlimited blog posts and ad copy, custom AI model tailored to your brand voice and custom platform integrations and data mapping

    Website: hypotenuse.ai

    4.Copy.ai

CopyAI is one of the most diverse AI copywriting tools available. It uses GPT-3 and offers a huge selection of templates, for everything from blog outlines and ideas, social media content, and email marketing copy, to website copy, case study templates, and video content.

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (6)

CopyAI also offers a range of writing tools and start-up tools for everything from brainstorming your company motto to refining your target audience.

The things we didn’t love about CopyAI were:

    • The quality of the content generated was quite inconsistent. Some of it, especially short texts like product descriptions and social media captions, was good enough to use with little to no editing but others were more or less gibberish or fluently written but not relevant.
    • Input options were limited, so you couldn’t always provide enough information to get the results to be more relevant.
    • The layout wasn’t as user-friendly as some of the other tools we tested

While the results were often somewhat hit or miss, the odd result was just hilariously random – like this company motto it suggested for us (Peer to Peer Marketing):

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (7)

Overall, CopyAI had a lot of interesting and useful features, and the majority of the content it produced for us was usable if we edited it a bit.

It was useful for things like product descriptions and other short texts, and it required less input from us than some of the other AI copywriting tools we tested.

    CopyAI’s Pricing:

    • Free Forever: 10 credits per month
    • Pro: $35/month, unlimited credits
    • Custom: Custom pricing, billed yearly

    Website: copy.ai

    5.Rytr

Rytr is another great free AI copywriting tool. It uses GPT-3 and Proprietary AI to generate content for more than 25 different use cases, which include unusually creative offerings like song lyrics and story plots.

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (8)

The interface is clean and simple, and it is very easy to use. It took less than a minute to sign up and start using Rytr.

We were impressed with the quality of some of the content Rytr produced, which was, for the most part, relevant and well-written.

On the downside, we found that Rytr:

    • Included uncited numbers and statistics in the content, with no way to verify them.
    • Blog outlines didn’t show a logical progression from introduction to conclusion.
    • Was inconsistent and would often include snippets that seemed completely out of place. For example, it added “Our motto is ‘Just go a little bit harder’.” to a product description for vegan soap:

5 Best AI Copywriting Tools in 2024 [Out of the 11 We Tested] (9)

These are small things that can easily be edited and, overall, the content was surprisingly good. Rytr also offers teams and multi-user collaborations, has a native plagiarism checker, and supports multiple languages.

    Rytr’s Pricing:

    • Free Plan: For to 5000 characters per month
    • Saver Plan: $9/month for up to 50 0000 characters per month
    • Unlimited Plan: $29/month for unlimited characters per month

Will AI Copywriting Tools Replace Human Copywriters?

Having tested more than ten of the best AI copywriting tools to create content for multiple use cases, we can say with some certainty that AI will not be replacing human copywriters any time soon!

As you can see from the results we shared above, even the best AI copywriting tools do not (yet) produce ready-to-use content that doesn’t need to be edited, fact-checked, and augmented by a human copywriter.

This is especially true for long-form content, but even short and simple texts need to be proofread, edited, and sometimes re-worked entirely before they can be used.

While the content may look and sound like it was written by a human, that doesn’t mean that the content is good content that is valuable for your content marketing and your brand.

So, if AI copywriters can’t take over your content generation completely, what CAN they do?

Having used several different tools to create a variety of content types, we concluded that AI copywriting tools will not replace human copywriters, but they will change the way we tackle the writing process.

We cant leave all the copy to AI, but we can use it to generate the basic text for some applications. From our tests, it seems that the best tasks to use AI copywriting tools for are:

    • Short, simple texts or writing the paragraph when you’re stuck
    • Product descriptions, features and benefits lists
    • Blog titles and outlines
    • Simple ad copy for short Google/social ads
    • Basic social posts and captions
    • SEO meta descriptions and titles
    • Keyword identification

Additionally, you can use AI copywriting software to elevate your copywriting and improve your efficiency.

Here are some of the ways you can leverage AI to your advantage as a copywriter:

How to Use AI Copywriting Software to Your Advantage as a Copywriter

AI copywriting tools can make your life as a copywriter much easier if you use them to help you write, rather than to write for you.

Essentially, you can have AI do some of the grunt work so that you can use your time to focus on finetuning your copy and producing truly great content.

Here are eight ways to do that:

1.Use AI for the Right Writing Tasks

Not every piece of writing needs to be amazing. Often, writers capable of writing truly epic content have to spend a large portion of their time writing things that do not require a huge amount of skill or expertise.

If that is the case, let AI produce several options for you, give them a quick edit and move on to the things that do need your big, beautiful, human brain!

Product descriptions, feature and benefits lists, themed social media posts for marketing events like Valentine’s Day… These are all time-consuming tasks that do not need to be done by you, on your own!

    2.Optimize Your Copy with AI

You can use AI to write your meta titles and meta descriptions or find ways to include your keywords in the body of your text. Some even do keyword generation for you. Wherever you can use a tool to speed up something you have been doing manually, it will be beneficial to you.

3.Use AI to Help You Rewrite Copy

‍There are many, many instances where a copywriter needs to say the same thing, differently. Once or twice is easy, but it gets challenging when you have a find a unique way to write about the same item/brand/event for numerous different contexts.

AI tools to rewrite or rephrase copy are a great way to speed up that process while ensuring that the reworded copy does not get flagged for plagiarism.

4.Let AI Help You Get Unstuck When You Have Writer’s Block

Every writer knows that there are times when you look at the sentence you just wrote and you have no idea what to write next.

Sometimes you know what you need to say, you just have no idea how to word it properly. Or you have so many things to say, that you can’t decide where to start.

No matter how hard you try, no matter how dedicated you are, the words just do not flow and you’re stuck.

AI can help you get unstuck! Letting AI write your next paragraph can help you get the ball rolling again. Even if it just shows you what you didn’t want to say, you will suddenly have clarity on what you do want to say.

5.Learn How to Get the Most Out of the Tool You Use

AI copywriting tools generate the best content when they’re fed the right inputs from you. Spend some time figuring out what the tool you’re using needs to create copy that is suitable for your needs. It is well worth the investment and will cut down on your editing time later.

Look at the rest of the features and tools they provide too and see which ones can be useful for you. As long as it doesn’t compromise the quality of your work, anything that saves you time, saves you money!

6.Use AI to Generate Blog Outlines and Templates

Blog outlines and templates can take time to create. AI copywriting tools have loads of them that you can use and tweak to your specific topic and context.

For example, it took just a few minutes to generate the title, outline, and a few paragraphs under each heading of a blog post using Hypotenuse AI. From there, we could copy the content into a document and get started, with the outline and opening paragraphs already in place!

    7.Become an Expert Editor

No matter how good your AI copywriting tool is, the content will always need to be carefully edited. Editing someone else’s writing is a great learning experience that every writer, no matter how experienced they are, can learn from.

Editing AI copy is no different. In fact, editing AI copy will most likely make you a better writer and help you see aspects of your own writing that need to be improved.

Similarly, most AI tools have built-in tools to check spelling and grammar, and some have built-in tools to check for plagiarism. You can use these to check your work, in the same way that many writers use programs like Grammarly.

8.Learn to Improve AI Content Instead of Writing it from Scratch

The best AI copywriting tools are capable of producing content that doesn’t need a lot of editing. Often, turning average content into great content is still easier, and quicker, than writing it from scratch.

This will vary depending on the type of content you’re creating, and the niche you’re writing for, but it is well worth seeing if AI can do all the grunt work for you.

That way, you can come in and re-work the content into something truly amazing – in the time it would take to write something truly average!

Final Thoughts on the Best AI Copywriting Tools

As the AI copywriting tools stand now, human copywriters still have an upper hand, and AI copywriting tools will not be replacing human writers any time soon.

That said, as AI coding improves and as computers become more intelligent, AI tools will most likely become a part of day-to-day life for most copywriters. In fact, if you consider the popularity of tools like Grammarly, they already have!

While the AI copywriting tools that we tested are not yet capable of producing ready-to-use content, or content that is of comparable value to copy written by a skilled human writer, they do offer some tremendously useful features that can help copywriters write better, and much more efficiently!
