If you get HBO with your cable or satellite TV package, then you might have access to Max. To find out if your provider supports Max, go to max.com/provider and search for your provider, or go to Max providers. HBO Max subscribers with an active subscription have access to Max.

HBO Max subscribers

If you're a current HBO Max subscriber, you won't need to sign up for Max. The HBO Max app will either automatically update to Max, or when you open HBO Max, you'll be prompted to download the Max app.

Existing HBO Max subscribers automatically have Max accounts. On some platforms, your HBO Max app will update itself into Max; on others, you may need to download a new Max app.

You have access to Max Ad-Free right now at no extra cost if you subscribe to HBO through Amazon Appstore, Apple, Google Play, Roku Channel Store, Samsung TV, WarnerMedia, Consolidated Communications, Liberty, North State, Optimum, Service Electric Cablevision, Verizon Fios or Ziply Fiber.

Warner Bros wanted a name that was more family friendly, had less of HBO's male audience skew, and was perhaps less likely to lead to the churn HBO faced with people joining for specific shows and leaving. Specifically, 4K (and HDR) streaming will be removed for legacy customers; they'll now be limited to HD quality, just like anyone signing up for Max's ad-free tier today would be. If they want to keep 4K playback, it'll require stepping up to the “ultimate” plan, which costs $19.99 per month.
