Worm: Necropalace is a symphony of gothic metal that captivates with its unique blend of campiness and opulence. This Florida-based project, initially a solo venture by Phantom Slaughter (Nicholas Radelat), has evolved significantly since 2022 with the addition of Wroth Septentrion (Philippe Tougas). Together, they've crafted a sound that's both extravagant and vampiric, pushing the boundaries of symphonic black metal. The band's new direction is evident in the EP 'Necropalace', which marks a significant step up in scale with Century Media. The EP showcases a more melodic and dynamic Worm, with Tougas' guitar solos and Radelat's keyboard melodies creating a dramatic and theatrical atmosphere. While the songs are indulgent and proggy, with an average length of 10 minutes, they sometimes feel like they could have been pushed further. The band's riffs, though avoiding repetition, can seem repetitive at times. Despite this, the EP is a delightful and immersive listen, offering a whimsical counterbalance to the shock and horror of the genre. The title track, in particular, stands out with its colorful scene-setting details, including an Opeth-like acoustic bridge and sabre-clashing sounds. Overall, 'Necropalace' is a testament to the band's ability to create a haunting and atmospheric soundscape, making it a must-listen for fans of gothic and symphonic metal.
