1 Autocratic leadership
Autocratic leadership is when you make all the decisions and direct your team members to follow your instructions without much input or feedback. This style can be effective when you need to achieve quick results, deal with crises, or enforce compliance. However, it can also cause resentment, low morale, and high turnover if used too often or inappropriately. Therefore, you should balance your authority with respect, communication, and recognition for your team.

As a rule, a purely autocratic leadership style no longer has any place in modern organizations. Emergency situations can be the big exception. In everyday corporate life, however, the autocratic leadership style according to Weber or the authoritarian leadership style according to Lewin tends to lead to resentment in the team and is often associated with bad leadership.

Democratic leadership is when you involve your team members in the decision-making process and encourage collaboration and creativity. This style can be effective when you want to foster innovation, engagement, and ownership among your team. However, it can also be time-consuming, confusing, and inefficient if there are too many opinions, conflicts, or unclear goals. Therefore, you should provide clear guidance, direction, and feedback for your team.

3 Transformational leadership
Transformational leadership is when you inspire your team members to share your vision, values, and purpose, and empower them to achieve higher levels of performance and growth. This style can be effective when you want to drive change, overcome challenges, and create a positive culture in your organization. However, it can also be demanding, unrealistic, and exhausting if you do not have enough resources, support, or balance. Build a strong and likeminded culture around your team. During my time in leadership, I would treat my Jr brokers like my clients. I would be available 24/7. I would give them the confidence of always having an experience professional by their side. If something wasn’t working for them, we would strategize other methods of success and hold them accountable for effort. Communication and persistence are key.

Servant leadership is when you focus on the needs, interests, and development of your team members, and support them to reach their full potential. This style can be effective when you want to build trust, loyalty, and commitment among your team. However, it can also be misunderstood, exploited, or ineffective if you do not have enough authority, influence, or accountability. Therefore, you should balance your service with your goals, standards, and boundaries.

In my experience as a leadership coach, most managers default to one style - in the UK this seems to be a supporting or coaching type leadership style BUT people are different and have different needs. You need to adapt your style to their needs to accelerate their development. If you're using one style with everyone you are undoubtedly switching off more people than you're switching on

You won't know until you meet your team and understand the project that you're all working on! It is so dependent on the leader, followers, and an incredibly dynamic environment, on the culture you've inherited, on so many factors.

It's not one style over another, but a 'symphony' of leadership styles, in the right amount, at the right time, that will deliver results.

Blend leadership styles like a symphony: Be visionary to inspire, democratic to empower, and coaching to develop talent. Rotate styles based on context, embracing adaptability over rigidity. Lead with empathy, understanding that the most effective leadership is about guiding, not dictating. Remember, leadership isn't a one-size-fits-all; it is about leveraging diverse approaches to orchestrate success.
