7.12 Backwards Compatibility
Now that there is a definitive ISO standard C++, G++ has a specificationto adhere to. The C++ language evolved over time, and features thatused to be acceptable in previous drafts of the standard, such as the ARM[Annotated C++ Reference Manual], are no longer accepted. In order to allowcompilation of C++ written to such drafts, G++ contains some backwardscompatibilities. All such backwards compatibility features areliable to disappear in future versions of G++. They should be considereddeprecated. See Deprecated Features.
For scope
If a variable is declared at for scope, it used to remain in scopeuntil the end of the scope that contained the for statement (ratherthan just within the for scope). The deprecated-fno-for-scope option enables this non-standard behavior.Without the option, G++ retains this, but issues a warning, if such avariable is accessed outside the for scope.
The behavior is deprecated, only available with -std=c++98-std=gnu++98 languages and you must use the-fpermissive option to enable it. The behavior will beremoved.
Friend Injection
The -ffriend-injection option makes injected friends visibleto regular name lookup, unlike standard C++. This option isdeprecated and will be removed.
Implicit C language
Old C system header files did not contain an extern "C" {…}
scope to set the language. On such systems, all header files areimplicitly scoped inside a C language scope. Also, an empty prototype()
is treated as an unspecified number of arguments, ratherthan no arguments, as C++ demands.
FAQs
gcc --version will tell you the version of the gcc executable in your path. rpm -q libstdc++-devel will tell you the version of the package that owns the C++ standard library headers. rpm --verify libstdc++-devel will check that you haven't messed up the C++ headers by replacing them with something else.
How do I check if I have GCC installed? ›
To check if it is installed or not, open Command Prompt and type g++ — version. The MinGW compiler (GCC) is not being detected by the command prompt because the environment path variable has not been set.
What to do if GCC is not recognized? ›
The error "'gcc' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.” occurs for two primary reasons: Reason 1: Absence of the gcc compiler on your computer. The solution is to simply install it. Reason 2: The Compiler path is not included in your system's 'PATH' environment variable.
What is the command to install GCC? ›
In most Linux distributions, the GCC command comes pre-installed. However, if it's not, you can install it in Debian based distributions like Ubuntu, by running the command sudo apt-get install gcc . For RPM-based distributions like CentOS, you would run the command sudo yum install gcc .
How to run GCC in terminal? ›

What is GNU compiler collection used for? ›
GCC is a toolchain that compiles code, links it with any library dependencies, converts that code to assembly, and then prepares executable files. It follows the standard UNIX design philosophy of using simple tools that perform individual tasks well.
How do I open the compiler in Windows? ›
To do this, press the Windows key, type cmd , right-click Command Prompt, and then select Run as Administrator. Once the prompt window is open, double-check that the compiler installed properly (and that the environment variables are set) by running the command gcc -- version at the prompt.
What are the steps for compilation using GCC compiler? ›
GCC stands for GNU Compiler Collection and it is a compiler system produced by the GNU project. There are four steps to the compilation process: preprocessing, compiling, assembly, and linking.
Is GNU compatible with Windows? ›
Many GNU programs have been ported to other operating systems, including proprietary platforms such as Microsoft Windows and macOS. GNU programs have been shown to be more reliable than their proprietary Unix counterparts.
