The UK is currently in the assessment phase of a multinational armoured vehicle program, centered around the Patria 6x6, with no procurement decision made yet. But here's where it gets interesting: while the UK joined the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program in September 2025, the initiative was actually launched in 2020 by Finland, Estonia, and Latvia, with Sweden and Germany joining in 2022. And this is the part most people miss: the Patria 6x6, also known as the XA-300, is a versatile wheeled armoured personnel carrier, designed primarily for troop transport but configurable for a range of roles, from machine guns to medium-calibre turrets and a 120mm turreted mortar.
The CAVS program aims to develop a shared 6x6 armoured platform, and the Patria 6x6 has already been ordered by several members, with Latvia procuring over 200 vehicles and Sweden ordering 425. Finland has also expressed interest in acquiring 160 vehicles. But the UK's involvement is particularly noteworthy, as it signals early industrial alignment with the program, with Babcock UK and Patria signing a memorandum of understanding in January 2025.
