You will NOT believe it, but I found the holy grail of keto bagels with Better Brand bagels! The “chew” is spot on, they pass my ultimate test of “tastes great even before toasted or topped,” and my partner didn’t know they were low carb bagels.
I’d like to say that once I went low carb, I stopped wanting bread. And for cakes and cookies, that has generally turned out to be true for me. Over the years of being on keto, I stopped craving sweets. I still crave a good bagel.
So what’s great about these bagels? They hit the mark for having the same mouth-feel as boiled bagels have, which I have truly missed. I have tried many low carb bagels, and they usually fall short. Low carb baked items tend to taste flat, and the texture is off due to the lack of gluten.
Before I found these bagels, I would compensate for the flat taste and texture by adding a lot of fat in the form of cream cheese or butter, I would sometimes salt it, and I would be sure to add something zesty to trick the palate. And that was a fine coping mechanism.
What if you didn’t have to “cope” with a low carb bagel? In fact, what if you LOVED it?!
I was so stoked about these bagels that I’m writing this product review of The Better Bagel without being asked to write it. I legit want to see them succeed because they deserve it. I’m amazed, and you will be too.
I made bagels three ways to inspire you, and the fact that one way was merely toasted with good grass-fed butter tells you right away, this bagel can stand on it’s own! Then I added almond butter, and it was lovely.
The next day, I made avocado bagel because my tomato plant put out those gems, and besides, avocado.
Then later in the week, for lunch I made a pizza bagel with marinara, cheese, turkey pepperoni and fresh basil. Drizzle it with olive oil for even better macros.
So what are the macros for these babies? The Better Bagel has 5 net carbs, 26g of protein, and 1g of sugar.
If you are not a net-carber, then yes, these bagels may not be for you. They start at 40g of carbs and 35g are fiber, so in my world I subtract them. I’ve been doing it that way for over five years and it’s worked for me, and I also honor that for some people that will not work for them. Or at a minimum, maybe it would work as a rare treat.
So check them out, and let me know if you like my first stab at a product review. I try almost every new keto product that hits the market, so I have a ton of knowledge to share if y’all are interested! I look forward to your comments!
