Pompey's New Signing: Millenic Alli - Why the Short-Term Deal Suits the Blues (2026)

Portsmouth's John Mousinho on why a 'short-term' deal for Luton's Millenic Alli is a strategic move - and the club's eye on further signings

Portsmouth have made their first move in the January transfer window, securing a short-term deal with Luton's Millenic Alli. Head coach John Mousinho believes this move will strengthen the team, despite his desire to add more wingers.

The Hatters acquired Alli from Exeter for a reported £1.5m just a year ago, and the Irishman has been a standout performer in the team's efforts to remain in the Championship. Mousinho is particularly excited about Alli's potential impact on his injury-prone squad.

'We do want more wingers,' Mousinho told The News. 'Millenic was one of the players available to us on loan. We have several wingers, but only a few are currently fit. So, the short-term loan deal seems like a good fit for us.'

Alli's versatility is a key strength. He's an explosive right-footed winger who can play on both flanks, often moving inside. This old-school style, which Mousinho appreciates, is becoming rare in modern football.

'He has a really good eye for goal,' Mousinho noted. 'That's why Luton signed him; he scored goals and created excitement at Exeter, and he did the same at the end of last season. We've admired him for a while; he was one of Luton's bright spots during a challenging period, scoring goals and playing consistently in the Championship.'

However, since Jack Wilshere took over as boss in October, Alli's playing time has been limited. He's started just four matches and was substituted at half-time against Port Vale in December. Mousinho explains, 'If he had been playing every week, he might not have been available to us. It's a positive early signing for us.'

Despite his limited playing time, Mousinho remains optimistic about Alli's contribution. 'He can play off either flank and has even played centrally. He's versatile enough to play on the left or right, and he's done that consistently over the past year.'

Despite the short-term deal, Mousinho is clear about his long-term goals. 'We want more wingers, and we'll continue to explore options to strengthen our squad.' This move is a strategic step towards that goal, and Portsmouth fans can look forward to seeing more of Alli's potential as the season progresses.
