Module summary

Personal effectiveness will consist of a range of skills development workshops aimed at improving personal and professional potential among students. Presentation skills, academic referencing, resilience and reflective skills, effective time management, negotiation and leadership skills, teamwork and conflict management, are some of the core areas that will be covered at the start of this module. Later in the Autumn term, students will have six weeks of intense Project Management workshops. The Spring term will focus on sustainability in engineering and project management. This will be taught using a series of lectures and masterclasses.

Subject content aims:

  • To expose students to a wide range of generic management and technical skills that will be useful in everyday working situations.
  • To encourage discussion and practice in the use of these skills throughout the MSc course.
  • To improve transferable skills development in students and prepare them for industry roles

  • Technical knowledge and application to specific tasks

  • Team working knowledge and practice in managing conflict

Subject content learning outcomes

After successful completion of this module, students will:

  • be able to utilise IT skills more effectively
  • understand the key elements of leadership, team working and communication
  • apply management knowledge to organisational issues
  • have a greater understanding of research strategies and apply them appropriately

Graduate skills learning outcomes

After successful completion of this module, students will:

  • have improved capacity for research, analysis and synthesis through the effective use of IT tools
  • understand issues of communication in a number of media and be able to use a range of media more effectively
  • be able to apply knowledge and/or skills in practice
  • manage information and time more effectively
  • be clear about decision making criteria

Module content

There will be 8 lectures and 4 workshops as part of the Autumn term and 9 lectures/Masterclasses in the Spring term. The Autumn term will focus on academic skills and project management whereas Spring term will look at sustainability in engineering and project management. Students who have this module as an optional are welcome to attend any of the lectures and masterclasses for information if they wish.

The School of PET aims to provide some form of feedback on all formative and summative assessments that are carried out during the degree programme. In general, feedback on any written work/assignments undertaken will be sufficient so as to indicate the nature of the changes needed in order to improve the work. The School will endeavour to return all exam feedback within 25 working days of the exam date. The School would normally expect to adhere to the times given, however, it is possible that exceptional circ*mstances may delay feedback. The School will endeavour to keep such delays to a minimum. Please note that any marks released are subject to ratification by the Board of Examiners and Senate. Meetings at the start/end of each term provide you with an opportunity to discuss and reflect with your supervisor on your overall performance to date.
