Oculus Rift sales – additional information

The virtual reality headset Oculus Rift is set for release to the consumer market in early 2016. In order to encourage the developer community to program content for the device, Oculus VR, the company behind the product, released two development kits, DK1 and DK2, in 2012 and 2014 respectively. The first generation of the Oculus Rift development kit was sold for 300 U.S. dollars, and the second for 350 U.S. dollars.

Considering a large of part of the consumers in the U.S. believes this price range is appropriate for a virtual reality headset, it is no surprise that almost half of the development kits were sold in North America. The United States is a promising market for the Oculus Rift and its competitors, given that almost 70 percent of consumers in the U.S. are willing to buy a virtual reality headset, according to a Statista survey.

With the Oculus Rift as a possible breakthrough product, the virtual reality market is forecast to grow strongly in the next few years. Its revenue is projected to increase from 90 million U.S. dollars in 2014 to 5.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. According to recent forecasts, the revenue from virtual reality head-mounted displays is expected to grow from 685 million U.S. dollars in 2015 to almost four billion U.S. dollars in 2018.
