Swallowing problems affect a sizable portion of the population, with estimates suggesting 15–30% of Australians aged 65 and over experience some degree of dysphagia. This service marks a meaningful advance for the Midwest by expanding access to precise, dynamic assessments that previously required travel to metropolitan centers.
VFSS is a real-time X-ray procedure that follows how food and fluids travel from the mouth to the esophagus. By watching the oral and pharyngeal phases live, specialist speech pathologists and radiologists can diagnose swallowing disorders with greater accuracy and tailor treatment accordingly. In many cases, this enables clinicians to identify risks such as aspiration—when material enters the airway—and to recommend safe strategies, texture-modified diets, and targeted rehabilitation exercises to strengthen swallowing and improve safety.
