Get ready for an exciting deep dive into the world of NC State football as we explore the linebacker and Edge positions!
The Wolfpack's Defense: A Work in Progress
With spring practice just around the corner, it's time to analyze NC State's defensive units. The team had a solid 2025 season, but they're aiming to take their game to the next level. Today, we're focusing on the heart of the defense: the linebackers and Edge rushers.
Last Season's Struggles and Successes
The linebacker unit faced some early challenges. Caden Fordham, the leader of the pack, was still recovering from major knee surgery when the season began. Despite not being at full strength, Fordham showed incredible resilience and finished the season strong, leading the ACC with an impressive 143 tackles. He also ranked fourth nationally in this category and topped the Power Four players in tackles.
However, injuries took a toll on the team. Starter Will linebacker Sean Brown suffered a season-ending injury, and his transition from safety to linebacker seemed to be a tough ask. The Pack also missed AJ Richardson and Kelvon McBride, who were expected to be top reserves but were sidelined due to injuries.
Kenny Soares Jr. stepped up, but his tackle stats didn't tell the whole story. According to PFF, he missed a significant number of tackles. Sabastian Harsh and Cian Slone, the Edge players, had a combined four sacks, which was underwhelming compared to their peers.
A Collective Defensive Effort
The defensive issues weren't limited to just one position. State ranked low in various defensive categories within the conference. They need to improve their pass rush and overall defensive performance.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Most of last season's key contributors at linebacker and Edge have moved on. There's a sense that cross-training at linebacker will be a focus this season. While positions won't be fully interchangeable, players will likely practice multiple roles.
LaCorian Hodge and Zane Williams, who played limited snaps last fall, are back and could see more action, especially Hodge at the Will position.
Ke'Von Carter, a sophomore, showed promise as a true freshman and could make an impact at the Sam linebacker position.
Fresh Faces and Transfer Talent
NC State has signed three high school linebackers and two prep Edges. Zykir Moore stands out as a potential star, but the others are likely to redshirt. The Wolfpack has also added some experienced transfers.
Raul Aguirre Jr., a Miami transfer, is expected to be the starting Mike linebacker. He brings valuable experience and has recorded impressive stats over the past two seasons. Dakaari Nelson, a Penn State transfer, could be State's starting Will linebacker. He started as a four-star safety recruit and has shown versatility by moving to linebacker.
Harvey Dyson, a former Tulane Edge, is one of State's biggest offseason additions. He was an All-AAC Third Team member in 2025 and is expected to start at Edge or Jack.
