A postal service crisis is unfolding in Milton Keynes, and residents are speaking out about the dire state of their mail delivery. The situation has become so dire that it's impacting daily life and even causing concern for personal health.
In the towns of Woburn Sands, Stoke Hammond, and Bletchley, located in north Buckinghamshire, people are expressing their frustration with the abominable and appalling postal service they've been experiencing. Residents have reported waiting weeks for deliveries, only to receive an overwhelming amount of mail all at once, sometimes as many as 20 pieces in a single day.
The Mayor of Woburn Sands, David Hopkins, a Conservative councillor, has called it a "really serious issue." He believes the service in Milton Keynes is broken and has vowed to take action by writing to the Royal Mail.
Bob Carson, a resident of Woburn Sands since 2019, described the service as "awful." He missed an important AGM meeting due to a delayed piece of mail, which arrived weeks after it was sent.
But here's where it gets controversial...
A Royal Mail spokesperson attributed the delays to severe weather conditions and resourcing challenges. However, residents like Terry Turner, who runs a business, have had to personally deliver tax returns to clients to ensure they aren't late in paying their taxes.
Turner's personal life has also been affected, as he's been waiting for his bowel screening test results, which are long overdue due to postal delays. His wife, Hazel, echoed the sentiment, describing the service as "abominable" and "absolutely appalling."
She believes the issue stems from a lack of familiarity among the new postal workers, who don't know the area well.
In Bletchley, a town known for its code-cracking history, residents are finding the postal service to be an enigma. Teresa Evans described it as "extremely poor" and said it has been this way for at least five or six months. She even wrote to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail to complain, but the issue persists.
Evans said she's missed hospital appointments due to the unreliable service and has had birthday cards returned to her undelivered.
The rapidly expanding developments in Whitehouse and Fairfields on the west side of Milton Keynes are adding to the strain on the postal service, with Labour MP Chris Curtis stating that "too many residents are still not getting the post they are expecting."
While there have been some improvements since the issue was brought to light last June, the problems are far from fixed.
A Royal Mail spokesperson apologized for the inconvenience and assured residents that their posties are working hard to restore normal delivery service as quickly as possible.
