Michigan Golf Trip 2025: Playing 5 Top Public Courses for the First Time! (2025)

In 2025, I embarked on a journey to explore the top Michigan golf courses, a pledge that ignited my passion for the sport. I set out to play five public courses, each offering a unique experience. Here's a captivating account of my first-time visits to these exceptional courses, where every swing revealed a new adventure.

The Orchards Golf Club, Washington Township
I arrived at The Orchards in mid-June, a time when the course was buzzing with life. This 525-acre paradise, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a masterpiece. The large bunkers, expansive fairways, and varied holes created a challenging yet enjoyable experience. Even the rain couldn't dampen the fun, and the course lived up to its reputation as one of metro Detroit's top public courses.

Tullymore Golf Resort, Stanwood
In mid-August, I ventured to Tullymore, a Jim Engh design that demands precision. The course winds through 800 acres of woods and wetlands, with quirky multi-tiered greens that entice you to play again and again. The unique pin placements and the course's layout make each round a new adventure, leaving you eager to explore more.

Timber Trace Golf Club, Pinckney
Timber Trace, a hidden gem, surprised me with its new ownership and staff's remarkable transformation. The course, framed by woods, offers ample fairway to hit, but a big miss into the trees or tall grass can be penal. The approach provides a cushion to miss on the correct side, making it a great deal for golfers of all skill levels.

Northville Hills Golf Club, Northville
As Northville Hills celebrated its 25th anniversary in early September, I was impressed by its well-maintained condition. The course, designed by Arnold Palmer, oscillates between fun and challenge, with fast, rolling greens and visually striking bunkering. Keeping the ball in the generous fairways can give you a chance to sink some putts and make The King proud.

Forest Dunes Golf Club, Roscommon
In late September, I explored Forest Dunes, a golf facility designed to perfection. With 64 holes, including the reversible Red and Black on The Loop, and a members-only course named SkyFall on the horizon, Forest Dunes offers a diverse golfing experience. The original course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, features most holes winding through the forest and plenty of doglegs before opening to dunesland. The par-3s, in particular, stood out for the contrast of the rugged beauty of the natural landscape, making it a memorable golfing experience.
