Melbourne's Metro Tunnel services were disrupted on Tuesday evening, leaving thousands of peak-hour commuters stranded in hot carriages for up to two hours. The fault, which occurred at Armadale, halted trains on the newly re-routed Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines, causing significant inconvenience for passengers. Metro Trains CEO Raymond O'Flaherty and Premier Jacinta Allan have both apologized for the incident, with O'Flaherty citing an entangled overhead wire and pantograph as the cause of the shutdown. The CEO defended the time it took to evacuate passengers, citing safety concerns and the complexity of the environment. The incident has sparked controversy, with the state opposition accusing the government of failing to prepare Melbourne's train network for high-capacity metro trains. The routes of the Cranbourne, Pakenham, and Sunbury lines changed as part of the Metro Tunnel project, and the lines began running at full capacity every three to four minutes through the underground stations on Sunday. Metro Trains has indicated that it will consider compensation for affected passengers in the coming weeks.
