Massive App Outage: Reddit, X, and More Go Down Simultaneously (2026)

A sudden wave of app crashes swept across the digital landscape, leaving users worldwide in a state of digital limbo. On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, several prominent applications experienced simultaneous outages, sparking widespread concern about a potential mass disruption. This event quickly became a hot topic, with many people wondering what could have caused such a widespread issue.

Around 10:00 AM ET, the social media platforms Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) became inaccessible for many users. This caused frustration and a sense of disconnect for those relying on these platforms for information and communication.

But here's where it gets interesting... Downdetector, a website dedicated to monitoring online outages, registered a staggering 67,000 reports for Reddit and 25,000 for X at the peak of the disruption in the US. It's important to remember that these numbers represent user-submitted reports, so the actual number of affected users could have been even higher.

Other apps weren't spared either. The investing platform Betterment and the EV charging app ChargePoint also experienced some issues, although the number of reports was significantly lower compared to Reddit and X. During the outage, some X users found that pages like trending topics still loaded, while their home feeds displayed error messages, a confusing and frustrating experience.

Both Reddit and X acknowledged the problems. Reddit confirmed it had detected an unusual surge in errors, while X users reported issues accessing their feeds. Both companies quickly worked to identify the cause and implement fixes.

The impact of the outage was global. Users in the UK also reported significant problems accessing both platforms, with thousands of users affected. Adding to the chaos, the popular Monzo banking app also crashed, preventing users from managing their finances.

And this is the part most people miss... Downdetector's data showed that the outages on X and Reddit were still affecting users in the US earlier that Tuesday. By 1:19 PM ET, Reddit announced that its systems were fully operational. However, some X users continued to report issues. In the UK, the X outage seemed to have subsided, but problems with Reddit and the Monzo banking app persisted.

Could this have been a coordinated attack, or just a coincidence? What do you think caused these apps to crash simultaneously? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
