Bold headline drama: a £6 million renovation of a Grade-II listed Buckinghamshire manor has polarized locals, who say the influencer-led makeover is garish and disruptive, even as the couple defends their vision.
A nine-bedroom 16th-century manor in Little Missenden, once featured on Midsomer Murders and other programs, was purchased by investment banker Hugh Karseras and his wife Hayley for around £6,000,000. After years of work, several villagers have criticized the project, labeling it loud and out of keeping with the historic property.
The renovation featured a new sauna, a contemporary kitchen and updated windows, all chronicled on Instagram as the couple shared progress with their audience. Hugh described the kitchen renovation to the Daily Mail as a spacious, tranquil, and modern area that includes a utility room, pantry, dining space, and lounge—part of a broader effort to modernize while preserving the home’s character.
Among other changes, the pair converted a former on-site schoolhouse into a room intended for spa rituals, styling the space in grey to evoke a chalet vibe. The project also included painting the Jacobean oak staircase from the 17th century a dark grey as part of an 18-month overhaul.
Neighbors have mixed feelings toward the couple. Many say Hugh and Hayley are pleasant and clearly proud of their achievement, noting they aren’t inheritors but self-made homeowners who invested in the property. Yet some locals complain about road closures and increased lorry traffic during the works, which intensified the sense of disruption in a small village.
One neighbor told the Mail that the couple’s pride is evident and that they’ve endured substantial hard work, while another expressed a harsher view: the village has become busier, the sounds and activity were constant, and the Instagram updates felt garish to watch. They questioned whether the house should have been left as it was, appreciating its historic charm rather than a modern display.
In response, the couple issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience caused to neighbours during the renovation. They emphasized that they obtained all relevant listed-building consents, planning permissions, environmental guidelines, and building regulations, and worked with a reputable local builder to ensure the work was conducted carefully and sympathetically. They noted that the project concluded last summer and expressed gratitude to the neighbors most affected, adding that no formal complaints were raised to them during the process.
Hugh and Hayley also highlighted their appreciation for living in a historic home within a picturesque village and pledged to maintain the property responsibly for future generations.
