Korean car brand Kia has overtaken Volkswagen as the most popular new car make in the Netherlands, according to 2022 figures from motoring organisations Bovag and Rai Vereniging. In total, dealers sold 312,000 cars last year, down 3.2% on 2021.

Volkswagen's leading position is confirmed by the market share of Volkswagen in the Dutch passenger car market. About every eighth car sold in the Netherlands is a Volkswagen car. The company reached a share of 12.5 percent in 2020.

For the fourth year in a row, Toyota is the world's best-selling automaker. We've been waiting for Toyota to release sales data for 2023 ever since the Volkswagen Group announced it sold 9.24 million cars.

Volkswagen Beetle – Over 23 million sold

The best-selling car in the Netherlands of 2022 is the Toyota Yaris with 11,178 sales (+40.2%) and 3.6% of market share, gaining 3 places from last year. In second place the Peugeot 208 -up 5 spots- with 9,669 (+58.1%), in front of the Kia Picanto, up 2 spots in 3rd with 7,396 (-6.7%).

The ranking of the best-selling car manufacturers is also interesting. Once again, Volkswagen confirms its position as leader, despite a 4% fall compared with January 2023. At 18,498 vehicles registered, however, we find Toyota in second place, up 8% on January 2023.

Top-Selling Car Brands in Europe in 2023

VW remained Europe's largest car brand with a market share of 10.6%. Audi increased sales in Europe in 2023 by nearly a fifth to improve from 6th to third. BMW and Mercedes each slipped down one rank position. Renault gained one position while Skoda improved from ninth.
