K-Pop Takes Over Box Office: 'Stray Kids' Tops Charts, 'Send Help' Follows (2026)

Box Office: 'Stray Kids' Dominates Charts, 'Send Help' in Second Place

The weekend box office is shaping up to be a slow one, with major studios holding back their releases to avoid the Super Bowl's dominance. This has left the field wide open for the K-pop concert film 'Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience' to take the top spot. The film, which documents the world tour and sold-out performance of the K-pop group at SoFi Stadium, grossed an estimated $3 million on Friday from 1,724 North American theaters, with a projected domestic gross of $5 million by Sunday.

In second place, 'Send Help' earned $2.8 million on its second Friday, a 61% decline from its opening day. The bloody comedy-thriller from Disney and 20th Century, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, is expected to add $9 million to $10 million by Sunday, bringing its total domestic gross to $34 million. Despite landing at No. 2 on Friday, 'Send Help' is predicted to win the weekend.

'Solo Mio', Angel Studios' newcomer rom-com starring Kevin James, took third place with an estimated $2.7 million from 3,052 theaters. The film, about a man who goes on his honeymoon alone after being left at the altar, is projected to pull in $6.6 million by Sunday.

Angel Studios, an indie distributor, made its mark with 'Sound of Freedom' in 2023, which became a sleeper hit after grossing $250 million worldwide. Other recent titles include 'David', 'The Senior', and 'Grow'.

'Iron Lung', the feature directorial debut of YouTube star Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach, landed at No. 4 on Friday with $2.04 million domestic, a 77% decline from its opening day. Based on the 2022 indie horror game, the film follows a convict in a post-apocalyptic future who must scavenge for resources in an ocean of blood. 'Iron Lung' is projected to make $5.7 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $30.7 million. Fischbach served as co-director with game developer David Szymanski and took on multiple roles in the film's production and distribution.

'The Strangers: Chapter 3', a horror newcomer, took seventh place with $1.58 million on Friday from 2,565 North American theaters. The third and final installment in the rebooted 'Strangers' trilogy is projected to gross $3.8 million by Sunday. The film, starring Madelain Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Froy Gutierrez, and Ema Horvath, follows a young woman relentlessly hunted by a trio of mask-wearing psychopaths.

At No. 5 was Vertical's 'Dracula', directed by Luc Besson. The film earned $2.03 million on Friday and is projected to bite down on $4.1 million by Sunday. Caleb Landry Jones stars as the titular bloodsucker, while Christoph Waltz plays his nemesis in Van Helsing.

But here's where it gets controversial... While 'Stray Kids' and 'Send Help' dominate the charts, 'Solo Mio' and 'Iron Lung' struggle to find their footing. Will these films be able to turn things around and make a strong showing at the box office? And this is the part most people miss... The success of 'Stray Kids' and 'Send Help' could be a sign of changing audience preferences, with a shift towards K-pop and action-packed thrillers. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree?
