Inland Renewable Energy Region: Australia's Next Big Thing in Solar and Wind Power (2026)

Australia's energy landscape is on the brink of a bold transformation, with a powerful alliance of renewable energy giants advocating for a groundbreaking plan. These industry titans are pushing for the creation of massive renewable energy zones in the remote, yet resource-rich, inland regions of New South Wales. But here's where it gets controversial: they argue that this is the 'least-regret pathway' to a coal-free future for the state.

The proposal, backed by a consortium of six major players, including Tilt Renewables, Squadron Energy, Iberdrola, Acciona Energía, Ark Energy, and Voyager Renewables, aims to harness the abundant wind and solar resources in these sparsely populated areas. The consortium has presented their vision to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) in a submission to the Draft 2026 Integrated System Plan.

Their ambitious plan calls for additional transmission infrastructure in Far, North West, and Western NSW, unlocking a renewable energy goldmine. The consortium believes this region could accommodate over 10 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power, with an initial capacity of 2-4 GW by 2035 and a substantial 6 GW by 2040.

But why this remote location? The consortium argues that existing zones face social license and land-use constraints, while offshore wind is costly and time-consuming. They believe the inland region offers a more viable solution with stronger resource fundamentals and fewer development barriers.

This idea echoes a similar proposal by NSW network company Transgrid in 2024 and 2025, advocating for large-scale inland renewable zones over offshore wind. Transgrid identified three potential sites with exceptional solar and wind resources, which could be connected via new HVDC transmission lines.

The consortium's submission to AEMO urges the prioritization of a new transmission line in the final 2026 ISP, due in June. They emphasize the region's potential to exceed 10 GW in the long term, creating a major corridor for future interconnection with neighboring states. Technical assessments have identified potential connection points, offering seamless integration into the existing network.

Interestingly, Transgrid is not listed among the consortium members. The network company, however, is collaborating with Acciona's infrastructure arm on the HumeLink transmission project in NSW. Iberdrola, another consortium member, is also active in Australia's transmission market, having secured a contract for the Victoria to New South Wales Interconnector West.

The submission further requests AEMO to include the transmission project in the Optimal Development Path (ODP) and streamline regulatory processes. The consortium believes this approach will ensure a reliable, affordable, and decarbonized energy future for Australia, while also strengthening the resilience of NSW and the NEM.

And this is the part most people miss: the consortium's proposal is not just about energy, but about shaping the future of the industry. It raises questions about the balance between environmental sustainability, economic viability, and community acceptance. Are remote, resource-rich locations the key to unlocking a coal-free future? What are the trade-offs between developing these regions and the potential social and environmental impacts? The debate is open, and the industry awaits your insights.
