How to Recover an ASD File (2024)

A file with the file extension of “.ASD” is an automatically-saved backup file for a Microsoft Word 2002 or 2003 document. The Microsoft Office Word application periodically backs up documents as you work on the file. Occasionally, the original document will become corrupted or lost due to system failures or software issues. In these cases, you may be able to recover the ASD file using the Word application you were using to create the document.

  1. 1.

Locate the ASD file on the computer.

  2. 2.

Right-click on the ASD file and click “Open With...”

  3. 3.

Click the “Microsoft Office Word” option. The document opens in the Word application. If the document does not open in Word, Microsoft recommends that you change the file extension of “.ASD” to “.DOC” and then attempt to open the document in Word.
