Automation can make your life so much easier. I often use Google Assistant to perform tasks that would otherwise be hard without a hands-free experience.

Whether it is making calls, finding directions, or playing a song, Google Assistant can do it all.

However, after regular use, I felt the need to personalize my Google Assistant.

For example, using the wake phrase “Ok Google” repeatedly was kind of putting me off.

Google assistant’s competitors like Siri, and Alexa, do not use a product name as the wake phrase.

Rather, they provide a more human-like interaction. This makes the virtual assistant even more fun to use.

Initially, I was disappointed to know that Google does not natively support changing the name of the assistant.

However, spending some hours searching on the internet helped me find some workarounds that allowed me to change the name and voice of Google Assistant.

You can change Google Assistant’s name by using apps like AutoVoice and Tasker. As far as the voice of the Google Assistant is concerned, it can be changed through the assistant settings.

In this article, you’ll find detailed information about changing your Google Assistant’s name, voice, language and accent, and celebrity sounds.

How to Change Google Assistant Name

One of the most exciting things about Google Assistant is that it lets you change your name.

The way your name is spelled can also be changed. Here I’ve mentioned some steps you can use to change how your Google Assistant pronounces your name.

  • First, you need to open your Google app and navigate to Account settings. Usually clicking on the profile picture on the top right corner of your screen can help you access the Account Settings.
  • Now click on Assistant Settings.
  • Click on Basic Info. Now click on the nickname button. Here you can edit your nickname.

Change Google Assistant Language

You can talk to your Google Assistant in languages other than English.

You can choose to use up to 2 languages at once. With this feature, your Google Assistant will recognize either of the languages you speak in.

If you are using smart speakers, make sure your mobile and the device are connected to the same internet.

Here’s how you can change the default language of your Google Assistant:

  • Now, head to the Google Home app on your mobile device.
  • Click on the Account button, on the top right corner of the screen.
  • Under the account settings, you’ll find an option Languages.
  • Select your current language and change it to your desired language.

You can set up different voices of Google Assistant on different user accounts.

When you log in to a particular account, all you have to do is search for the Assistant settings on Google home.

Once you switch between accounts, the voice of the assistant should automatically switch to the one that is set to default on your second account.

Deactivate Google Assistant Wake Phrase

No matter how well the Google Assistant works and makes your life easier, you cannot ignore the fact that the microphone is always active while using the Google Assistant.

Until August 2020, Google was storing the voice data of all the users by default.

Later, it updates its policy, and now it can only store your voice data if it has your permission.

If you have decided to stop using your Google Assistant, here is how you can deactivate the wake phrase.

  • On your Google Home, go to the Account section. You can find it in the top right corner of your Google app.
  • Now, select Assistant settings and click on General.
  • Here you will find the option to turn off your Google Assistant.

Check out the Settings option of your Assistant. Under this, find Voice settings.

Now choose the voice of your assistant from the available options on the list.

Can You Change the Wake Phrase for Google Assistant?

Google does not natively support changing the wake phrase of your Google Assistant.

However, there are some great workarounds that I’ve listed below.

Change the Wake Phrase for Google Assistant Using Mic+

Open Mic+ was a popular app that was frequently used by users to bring changes into their wake phrase of Google Assistant.

However, the app was removed from the Google Play Store. The Mic+ app can still be downloaded from the developer’s website and Amazon.

The Mic+ may not help you to change the wake phrase of the Google Assistant.

As per the Amazon reviews which are mostly negative for this app, it is not functional as of now.

The development of the app is believed to be stalled, hence a software update is also not expected.

Although I’ve found another great alternative, that is functional and can be used to change the wake phrase of your Google Assistant.

So, you can start by changing the name of your Google Assistant, and here is how it can be done:

  • Download the Tasker app from Google Play Store (It costs roughly around $3-4). This app helps you in automating your tasks. You can customize your command and actions using the Tasker app.
  • Now download AutoVoice. This app comes from the same developer as Tasker, and it is free to download. You do not need to pay for it.

Conclusion

Be it using a Google Home or your smartphone, the exciting features of Google Assistant are something we never want to miss out on.

You can change the wake phrase of Google, modify your name, and how the assistant calls you.
