What happened with HBO Max? ›

The popular streaming service HBO Max was officially reborn as “Max” on Tuesday. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the new name last month, along with plans to blend the existing HBO Max library with content from Discovery+.

How do I access it? HBO Max has a secret button that gives you a jump-start on what shows and movies are about to expire. Simply scroll down to the “Browse” section in the left sidebar, then select “Last Chance.” Next, you'll see a list of titles that are available for a finite amount of time.

last year, posted a net loss of $417 million for the quarter ended September. But its flagship streaming services, Discovery+ and Max, a rebrand of HBO Max that combined HBO's content with Discovery's onto one streaming platform, represented a bright spot as revenue and profit surged.

To make the flagship streamer look more “family friendly”: Warner Bros. Discovery executives ultimately felt that the HBO name was somehow restricting HBO Max's uptake among households with children.

So what does that mean for HBO? Well, the cable channel will be sticking around, but the streaming service, HBO Max - we'll have to prepare our goodbyes. By next year, it'll be replaced by a new service, not yet named, which combines HBO Max and Discovery's own streaming app, which is called Discovery+.

Here's how you can check who's using your account via the HBO Max mobile app: Launch the HBO Max app on your device. Choose your profile and tap on the profile image in the bottom right corner. Then go to the Settings cog and to Manage Devices.

How will the HBO Max and Discovery Plus merger affect HBO Max subscribers? If you are already an HBO Max subscriber, you will be able to access Max at the same subscription price. Besides, your current plan features will still be available for at least 6 months.

Warner Bros. Discovery pays licensing fees to carry such shows on its streaming platform, so removing them would save money on licensing, on top of the potential tax write-offs they could receive for axing the programs.

The service, which like CNN is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, has been scrapping TV shows and films left and right as it cuts costs, shifts strategy and prepares to merge next summer with Discovery+, its sister streaming service.
