Subjective Happiness Scale (aka General Happiness Scale)

Lyubomirsky, S. & Lepper, H. S. (1999). A measure of subjective happiness: Preliminary reliability and construct validation. Social Indicators Research, 46, 137-155.

Instructions:For each of the following statements and/or questions, please circle the point on the scale that youfeel is most appropriate in describing you.

Items:

  1. In general, I consider myself:not a very happy person 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 a very happy person

  2. Compared to most of my peers, I consider myself: less happy 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 more happy

  3. Some people are generally very happy. They enjoy life regardless of what is going on, getting themost out of everything. To what extent does this characterization describe you? not at all 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 a great deal

  4. Some people are generally not very happy. Although they are not depressed, they never seem ashappy as they might be. To what extend does this characterization describe you? not at all 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 a great deal

Scoring:Sum the scores for each item together. Keep scores continuous.

Oxford Happiness Questionnaire

Hills, P., & Argyle, M. (2002). The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire: A compact scale for the measurement of psychological well-being. Personality and Individual Differences, 33, 1073– 1082.

Instructions:Below are a number of statements about happiness. Please indicate how much you agree or disagreewith each by entering a number in the blank after each statement, according to the following scale:  1 = strongly disagree  2 = moderately disagree  3 = slightly disagree  4 = slightly agree  5 = moderately agree  6 = strongly agree

Please read the statements carefully, some of the questions are phrased positively and othersnegatively. Don’t take too long over individual questions; there are no “right” or “wrong” answers(and no trick questions). The first answer that comes into your head is probably the right one for you.If you find some of the questions difficult, please give the answer that is true for you in general or formost of the time.

PANAS

Instructions:This scale consists of a number of words that describe different feelings and emotions. Read each itemand then mark the appropriate answer in the space next to that word. Indicate to what extent youGENERALLY feel this way, that is how you feel ON AVERAGE.

Scoring:For all items, the following scores apply:  Very slightly or not at all 1  A little 2  Moderately 3  Quite a bit 4  Extremely 5

The total score is calculated by finding the sum of the 10 positive items, and then the 10 negativeitems. Scores range from 10 – 50 for both sets of items. For the total positive score, a higher scoreindicates more of a positive affect. For the total negative score, a lower score indicates less of anegative affect.
