What is the 99 percentile gifted and talented? ›

Level Three Gifted:

Approximately 98–99th percentiles on standardized tests. Terms Highly to Exceptionally Gifted or Very Advanced on IQ tests. IQ scores of about 130 to 140. One or two per grade level, more in high socioeconomic schools.

Most people use terms like “bright,” “gifted,” “exceptional,” “remarkable,” and “talented” interchangeably, but when a psychologist uses the term “gifted,” we're usually talking about something that is statistically quite rare. About 3 to 5 out of every 100 children could be considered gifted.

IQ tests are not all alike. Group tests are not equivalent to individual tests. Many gifted children do poorly on group tests due to noise, distractions, confusing directions, lack of interest, reading requirements, not understanding time limits, etc.

Testing for giftedness in children can open doors by helping a child develop those gifts into talents. But timing is important. Testing can be inaccurate before the age of 6, and it is unlikely parents could do anything differently if their child indeed tested as gifted.

Although IQ represents only a partial expression of giftedness, according to a purely psychometric view, giftedness is defined by an IQ of 130 or higher, placing gifted individuals at least two standard deviations above the population mean.

85 to 114: Average intelligence. 115 to 129: Above average or bright. 130 to 144: Moderately gifted. 145 to 159: Highly gifted.

Children with an IQ between 120 to about 135 comprise the largest cohort of gifted children. These children are usually popular among their peers, demonstrate leadership and have a good social and emotional profile.

Autism and intelligence are two separate characteristics. A person can be autistic with any level of intelligence. But if your child is gifted and autistic, it can seem like the two are connected.

Mildly gifted: 115 to 130. Moderately gifted: 130 to 145. Highly gifted: 145 to 160. Profoundly gifted: 160 or higher.

Why is my IQ high but bad grades? ›

They have a slow processing speed. Even if your child is highly intelligent, they may have a slower processing speed, meaning that it takes them longer to answer questions and grasp concepts. Many standardized tests in reading and math are timed, so speed matters.

Many gifted students may lack self-management strategies such as time management and study skills. Because gifted students often progress through the early years of school without being challenged, they sometimes fail to develop the self-management skills that other students master.

Signs of Giftedness in Children Include:

an extreme need for constant mental stimulation. an ability to learn and process complex information rapidly. a need to explore subjects in surprising depth. an insatiable curiosity, as demonstrated by endless questions and inquiries.

Many gifted children are being mis-diagnosed as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The gifted child's characteristics of intensity, sensitivity, impatience, and high motor activity can easily be mistaken for ADHD.

Make sure your child is prepared.

Inform your child of the upcoming test and encourage them to try their best. Assure your child that you are aware of the test and approve of their taking the test – tell them they will be called out of the regular classroom.

This means that the student had a test score greater than or equal to 99% of the reference population. Conversely, only 1% of students scored equal to or higher than the individual tested.

In the 3rd percentile to below the 85th percentile is at a healthy weight. In the 85th percentile to the 97th percentile is at risk for overweight. Above the 97th percentile to the 99.9th percentile is overweight. Above the 99th percentile is obese.

Being in the 99th percentile means that you are performing better than or are ranked higher than 99% of the other individuals who have taken the same test or measurement [1].
