German Passenger Car Sales up 5.4% in February
The number of new passenger car registrations in February was 217,388 units, up 5.4% from the same month last year, according to the German Federal Land Transport Authority (KBA).
Looking at February passenger car registrations by brand, VW increased 2.1% to 40,361 units (18.6% share), Mercedes decreased 7.4% to 20,70 units (9.2% share), BMW increased 8.1% to 16,096 units (7.4% share), and Skoda increased 15.3% to 15,848 units (7.3% share). Audi decreased by 21.9% to 14,274 (6.6%), Seat increased by 45.0% to 11,761 (5.4%), and Opel increased by 20.1% to 11,571 (5.3%).
Sales of gasoline vehicles in February increased 2.3% y-o-y to 77,106 units with a 35.5% share, hybrid vehicles (HV) increased 17.6% to 69,367 units with a 31.9% share (including a 22.3% increase to 14,575 units for plug-in hybrids (PHV) with a 6.7% share), electric vehicles (EVs) down 15.4% to 27,479 with a 12.6% share, and diesel vehicles up 9.7% to 42,153 with a 19.4% share.
The bonus for PHVs was eliminated in January 2023. Therefore, electrified vehicle sales had a rush in the fourth quarter of 2022, but fell in January 2023 in reaction to the rush; the EV environmental bonus was also eliminated in December 2023. Due to the low volume in the same month of the previous year, January 2024 appeared to show growth, but in February, which is more indicative of the actual situation, EV sales were down by double digits, clearly indicating that EV sales are losing momentum.
Average CO2 emissions increased by 2.5% to 122.8 g/km.
Truck registrations in February were up 21.6% y/y to 26,579 units, while bus registrations were up 25.3% to 510 units.
According to the Association of the German Automobile Manufacturers (VDA), passenger car exports in February were 277,700 units, unchanged from the same month last year, while domestic production was down 2% to 374,800 units.

German passenger car sales up 19.1% in January 2024
On February 5, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that new passenger car registrations in January 2024 increased 19.1% over the previous year to 213,553 units.
In January, passenger car registrations by brand were as follows: VW increased 12.1% to 41,548 units (19.5% share), Mercedes decreased 0.5% to 21,323 units (10.0% share), Skoda increased 21.3% to 16,686 units (7.8% share), BMW increased 44.2% to 16,087 units (7.5% share), Audi increased 4.6% to 15,439 units (7.2% share), and Opel increased 72.4% to 12,631 units (5.9%).
Sales of gasoline vehicles were up 16.9% to 81,724 units (38.3% share), hybrid vehicles (HV) were up 31.0% to 66,496 units with 31.3% share (of which plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) were up 62.6% to 14,396 units (6.7% share), electric vehicles (EV) increased by 23.9% to 22,474 units with a 10.5% share, and diesel vehicles increased by 4.3% to 40,936 units with a 19.2% share.
At the end of 2022, the environmental bonus for EVs was reduced and the bonus for PHEVs was eliminated. Therefore, sales of electrified vehicles had a rush in the fourth quarter of 2022, but fell in January 2023, and the increase in sales of electrified vehicles in January 2024 was due to the low volume in the same month of the previous year for comparison.
Average CO2 emissions fell 4.1% to 125.6 g/km.
Truck sales in January were up 13.4% y/y to 23,596 units, while bus sales were up 28.7% to 592 units.
In addition, according to the German Association of the Automobile Manufacturers (VDA), passenger car exports in January were up 2% y/y to 227,800 units, while domestic production fell 4% to 312,100 units.
