From Usher to Understudy: Zak Douglas's Incredible Journey
Imagine trading your everyday job for a starring role in the very place you work! That's precisely what happened to Zak Douglas, a local lad who went from managing the front-of-house at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to gracing its stage in the pantomime Sleeping Beauty.
Before dazzling audiences, Zak was a duty manager at the same theatre, a position he worked his way up to after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, he's the star!
But here's where it gets interesting: Zak's success isn't just limited to the stage. He's also landed roles in Channel 5's crime drama The Good Ship Murder and the ITV comedy series G'WED. Talk about a busy schedule!
For Zak, this isn't just a career shift; it's a full-circle moment. He recalls visiting the Grand Theatre as a child, sitting in the very seats where audiences now watch him perform. Now, he's stepping onto that stage as Gerald the Herald, sharing the spotlight with other talented performers.
He reflects on his journey, saying, "It's amazing, especially as a local lad... being able to step on that stage is amazing." He adds that this opportunity allows him to combine two careers under the roof of a theatre he first visited as a boy. This is a dream come true for Zak, as he usually works in places like Manchester, London, Malta, and Morocco.
Zak's motivation goes beyond personal achievement. He wants to show other staff members and aspiring performers from the Midlands that success is within reach. He hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams, proving that the Grand Theatre stage is accessible to those with determination and talent.
James Snow, who is managed by Mr. Douglas at the theatre, finds Zak's journey inspiring. Darcy Biddulph-Smith, a colleague and friend for a decade, echoes this sentiment, highlighting that success doesn't require a London background or the most prestigious drama schools.
Zak's experience as a manager also allows him to mentor aspiring actors, sharing the realities of the industry. He provides a balanced view, offering both the positives and the challenges.
Sleeping Beauty runs until January 4th.
