A controversial delay has been announced for a major federal oil and gas lease sale in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve. This delay, caused by a simple public notice error, has sparked debates and raised questions about the future of this region's energy development.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has rescheduled the lease sale, originally planned for March 9, to March 18. This decision was made after a legally required Federal Register notice failed to publish last week, a critical step in the process.
Federal law mandates that such notices be published at least 30 days before any lease sale, ensuring transparency and public awareness. However, this crucial step was overlooked, leading to a nine-day postponement.
This lease sale is the first of five mandated by the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," a sweeping budget and tax bill passed last summer. The act requires at least five lease sales, each offering a minimum of 4 million acres, to be held by 2035.
But here's where it gets controversial: this is also the first NPR-A lease sale since 2019, and it's being conducted under a new Trump administration management plan. This plan opens up long-protected areas of the reserve, including the Teshekpuk Lake region, to leasing.
The Trump plan makes a staggering 82% of the 23-million-acre reserve available for leasing, a significant departure from the Obama administration's approach. Under the previous plan, only about half of the reserve was open for leasing, and the Teshekpuk Lake area was one of five "special areas" protected from development.
And this is the part most people miss: a new lawsuit is pending over the Trump administration's decision to remove protections for the Teshekpuk Caribou Herd and its habitat. Filed by an organization in Nuiqsut, the closest Inupiat village to existing NPR-A development, the lawsuit challenges the administration's cancellation of a conservation agreement signed by the Biden administration in 2024.
As of Tuesday morning, it was unclear exactly which acres would be up for auction on March 18. The BLM's NPR-A website had not yet posted details of the sale.
