Novak Djokovic's Australian Open Dreams Teetered on the Brink Due to a Gruesome Foot Injury, Only for His Opponent to Withdraw Moments Later!
It seems even a four-day respite wasn't enough to help the legendary Novak Djokovic conquer a horrendous blister that had him on the verge of an early exit from the Australian Open. But in a twist of fate that's becoming almost a pattern, for the second match in a row, his opponent was forced to retire due to injury, mere moments after Djokovic himself required medical attention. This remarkable turn of events, unbelievably, has propelled the 24-time Grand Slam champion into the semi-finals.
This isn't the first time we've seen a rival bow out while facing Djokovic in a major tournament. For the second time in less than a year, world No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti found himself unable to continue in the second week of a Grand Slam after holding a strong position against a top player.
Djokovic himself acknowledged the situation, stating, “He was the far better player... I don’t know what to say. He should’ve been a winner today. I tried my best, really. I just wasn’t feeling the ball today the first couple of sets, but that’s also due to his quality and the variety in his game.”
This persistent foot issue has been a shadow over Djokovic's campaign. He battled a blister during his third-round victory over Botic van de Zandschulp. While a subsequent withdrawal from his fourth-round opponent, Jakub Mensik, granted him an unexpected break, those four days off his feet didn't provide the 10-time Australian Open champion with the full recovery he desperately needed.
The world No. 4 required a medical timeout to address multiple foot ailments, including the unfortunate task of covering a popped blister located a few centimeters below his big toe on the sole of his foot. His toe was also freshly bandaged.
“That is very nasty… I can’t imagine that it’s not a factor,” commented tennis icon John McEnroe. “I mean, this guy relies on movement even at his age. And when you have something that’s painful like that, it gets in your head and you know, he’s been flat, he had the good start, but he’s really tailed off. (The doctor) is trying to save him.”

It's worth noting that Djokovic hadn't been eliminated before the semi-finals of the Australian Open since 2018, when he was defeated by Hyeon Chung. Ironically, Chung himself had to withdraw from his semi-final match against Roger Federer due to a similarly debilitating blister, which his agent described at the time as “blister under blister under blister.”
This scenario of an opponent's retirement was a very real possibility until Musetti suddenly sustained an injury early in the third set. After Djokovic managed to break the Italian's serve, Musetti suddenly needed treatment from the physio for a groin issue.
“This is an unbelievable turn of events,” McEnroe exclaimed. “It’s sad to see this. It’s a bummer.”
When play resumed, Musetti appeared to be attempting to end points very quickly, a clear indication that he lacked confidence in his ability to move freely. This led to his retirement, mirroring his withdrawal from the French Open semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz last year.
Earlier in the match, the Serbian star displayed a moment of exceptional sportsmanship. He alerted the umpire that he had made contact with the ball, and that Musetti deserved to win the point, even though no call had been made and Djokovic had been awarded the point.
“Respect for Djokovic surrendering a point in a key game after volunteering that he had made contact with the ball even though it had not been called and he had been awarded the point,” veteran tennis writer Christopher Clarey tweeted. “Shouldn’t be rare but it is and it cost him: he went on to be broken by Musetti and go down two sets to love.”
But here's where it gets interesting: The winner of this particular match is widely expected to face Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
