Jocelyn Benson, Michigan's Democratic secretary of state and a gubernatorial candidate, highlights the challenge: "We as states have had to rebuild networks to protect our respective states from foreign interference. That's not easy. And we can never replicate what the federal government has built and had done."
A Way Forward?
There are efforts to restore funding and rebuild trust, such as Senator Mark Warner's legislation to fund critical cyber information-sharing programs. However, the path forward is uncertain. The EI-ISAC, now largely funded by its members, is working to keep its doors open and its services available. But the absence of federal support has left a significant gap.
