In a recent interview, Nigerian music icon D'banj opened up about his journey, reflecting on the iconic Mo'Hits Records era and the events that led to its split. The story behind the split and the generous gesture that followed will leave you intrigued.
D'banj, whose real name is Oladapo Oyebanjo, co-founded Mo'Hits Records with the legendary Don Jazzy (Michael Ajereh) in 2006. Together, they pioneered a unique sound and nurtured some of the biggest stars of that time. However, thirteen years ago, they decided to go their separate ways.
In a revealing conversation with Seun Okinbaloye on "MC On Podcast," D'banj shared that the decision to part ways was entirely Don Jazzy's. Despite this, Don Jazzy, now the CEO of Mavin Records, ensured D'banj received all his entitlements and even more.
"The idea to split didn't come from me; it was 100% Don Jazzy's decision. That's why we're still cool and have no issues. He gave me everything. Don Jazzy gave me 100% of my catalogue and even some unreleased songs," D'banj explained.
But here's where it gets controversial... D'banj suggests that their split might have been a matter of vision or timing. He believes they needed to cement their global movement, and he's glad that even after the split, they had success with "Oliver Twist." He maintains that he didn't offend Don Jazzy and prefers not to delve into details, stating, "I move like a bullet train."
D'banj also shared his admiration for Don Jazzy's success with Mavin Records, describing it as the best and most influential record label in Africa, if not the world. Despite their separation, they continued to collaborate and create meaningful work together.
However, D'banj's journey wasn't without its challenges. He revealed that the saddest experience of his life was losing his one-year-old son, Daniel Oyebanjo III, who tragically drowned in a swimming pool in 2018. This event shook D'banj to his core, making him question his invincibility.
"I think that's when I realized Superman has kryptonite. Even the Mo'Hits breakup didn't affect me, but losing my son... that's when I said, 'What is going on?' I always thought I was a superhero, but this was a major wake-up call."
After this tragedy, D'banj turned to prayer, and he believes God blessed him beyond his imagination. He now has a wonderful boy and girl, and he understands life and God better.
