Choosing Healthier Ice Cream Toppings (2024)

By Brandi Goodman

Ice cream is a favorite dessert among many -- especially during the warmest months of the year. July is also National Ice Cream Month, making it difficult to avoid indulging in the cool treat. If you are going to have some, at least choose a frozen yogurt or fat-free ice cream that won't have as many calories nor as much fat. You can also choose healthier toppings that will add to the nutritional value.

Nuts

Nuts are often a final topping on a sundae. Add them to the ice cream you're eating to help add protein and nutrients to the mix. You'll feel fuller faster if you're eating nuts and other fiber-rich toppings along with your dessert. A small scoop of ice cream topped with healthy ingredients should be enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. Dice up some of the healthiest versions, such as walnuts, almonds, or pecans.

Berries

A handful of berries added to your ice cream can change up the flavor and add some vitamins to the mix. Blueberries, raspberries, cherries, or even strawberry pieces all work wonders on top of a scoop of vanilla. Some work well on chocolate also, or you can give them a try atop your other favorite flavors for a unique combination. Many berries provide Vitamin C, antioxidants, and manganese.

Homemade Glaze

Pouring chocolate syrup or caramel over your ice cream may be the norm, but these options are far too sugary for your needs. It's better to make a homemade glaze from fruit that can be added on top of your dessert without as much worry. You can simmer your berries on the stovetop with a bit of cornstarch, water, and organic sugar to create your concoction.

Shredded Coconut

If you enjoy coconut flavor, then adding some shredded coconut to your ice cream dish should prove enjoyable. You'll get a good dose of fiber, manganese, phosphorus, and other nutrients from it. Be sure to buy an unsweetened version for the best option.

Cereal Pieces

Some people prefer a crunchy dessert. Adding cereal pieces to your ice cream can help you achieve this result. Just be sure you're choosing healthier options, such as Bran Flakes, Great Grains, Fiber One, or Kashi. They will improve the nutritional value, adding fiber and iron to the mix.

Toppings add a unique touch to your dessert. Just make sure you're using healthier ingredients over your ice cream for a refreshing dessert that adds nutrition to your life instead of bringing you the negative effects of sugar and candy.
