Simply put, if the CEO is the top-most leader of the company, the president is usually second in command. But, what makes their roles different? Or similar?
The CEO is the final decision-maker in any company. They are the highest-ranking executive and the face of the company in public and of course, internally. The president, on the other hand, is second in command. They are second to the CEO and sometimes given the title COO. But this also depends on the kind of company and the size. In some companies, usually smaller ones, the CEO and president are the same person. While in others, the CEO appoints multiple presidents for different verticals of the company.

CEO’s role and responsibilities
- May also be the chairperson of the board of directors
- Managing the company’s operations
- Developing the vision and long-term goals for the company
- Developing company policy
- Decision-making for the entire company
- Overseeing company-wide operations
- Implementing strategic goals for the company
- Reporting to the board of directors and shareholders
- Being the company representative for the public
- Overseeing the duties and performance of the president or presidents and other C-level executives
President’s role and responsibilities
- May alternatively be given the title COO
- Reporting to the CEO (and also to the board of directors)
- Overseeing the duties and performance of vice presidents and higher-level managers
- Delegating work to managers to reach the vision and strategic goals instated by the CEO
- Overseeing day-to-day operations
- Managing company budgets and financials
- Implementing objectives depending on the needs and business of the company whether production, marketing, sales, etc.
Summary
While these are the general guidelines of how the CEO and president function and what their duties are, it does vary around the world and company to company. In some countries the CEO has power over the company as well as the board, and in other countries they do not. Corporate culture and hierarchy varies around the world and along with that so does the meaning of these positions and the responsibilities attached to them. So, the difference between CEO and president also varies.
