Australia's 125th Anniversary: A Journey to Nationhood

In 2026, Australia celebrates a remarkable 125 years since the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. This journey began on January 1, 1901, when six independent colonies united to become the states we know today: New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.
The Royal Australian Mint's Commemorative Collection
To mark this special occasion, the Royal Australian Mint has crafted a unique series of uncirculated coins. Each coin in this collection pays homage to one of the original colonies, now states, featuring their distinctive floral and faunal emblems. The coins for New South Wales and South Australia also include the emblems of the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory, respectively, reflecting their historical ties at the time of Federation.
The collection's centerpiece is a one-dollar coin representing the Commonwealth of Australia itself. These coins can be acquired individually or as a complete set, making them a perfect collectible or gift with a personal touch for anyone with a connection to these states.
A Complex Road to Federation
But here's where it gets interesting: the path to Federation was far from straightforward. Each colony had its own interests to protect, but through a series of conventions and referendums in the 1890s, they eventually agreed to unite. In 1900, the British Parliament passed the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, which was then signed into law by Queen Victoria.
On January 1, 1901, Sydney's Centennial Park witnessed the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia, a momentous occasion. The first federal election followed soon after, on March 29-30, 1901, and the first Parliament was opened in Melbourne's Exhibition Building on May 9, 1901.
