Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has officially launched its Complete edition, and Nintendo should follow suit with one of its other big mobile games. After seven years of continuous support, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp reached its end of service on November 28, 2024. Shortly after, Nintendo launched Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete, an offline version of the game with no microtransactions.

Pocket Camp is far from Nintendo’s only foray into mobile gaming, however. Mario Kart Tour has been running for several years now, and as it approaches the end of its lifespan, it should take a page from Pocket Camp’s playbook.
Mario Kart Tour Should Follow Pocket Camp’s Example
Both Games Have Value That's Worth Preserving For Fans
Both Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Mario Kart Tour have been available for several years, with Pocket Camp being released in 2017 and Tour in 2019. In that span of time, both have raked in quite a bit of money for Nintendo. According to Statista, Pocket Camp and Tour stack up about the same in terms of revenue, while the profits of Nintendo's other mobile offerings vary significantly.

Mobile Game | Total Profits as of November 2024 (USD) |
---|---|
Fire Emblem Heroes | $879.34 million |
Mario Kart Tour | $267.33 million |
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp | $264.71 million |
Dragalia Lost | $122.2 million |
Super Mario Run | $69.97 million |
Dr. Mario World | $11.19 million |
Miitomo | $3.61 million |
Out of all Nintendo’s mobile games, Tour is the best fit to follow Pocket Camp in offering a Complete edition. Fire Emblem Heroes far outpaces them both in terms of profit and is likely to enjoy a long life before its end of service even comes into consideration. On the other end, games like Miitomo and Dragalia Lost simply didn't draw enough money to warrant the same kind of treatment.

While Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is closing its servers, the game itself isn't going anywhere, with an exciting new future ahead for fans.
As demonstrated by the strong sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Mario Kart franchise is as popular as ever. The game is in a sweet spot between Fire Emblem Heroes, which shows no signs of slowing down, and less successful properties that Nintendo might not invest in transitioning to a Complete version. As of October 2023, Nintendo ceased adding new content to Tour, so its sunsetting is inevitable at this point. Many players would surely leap at the opportunity to play a Complete edition of Mario Kart Tour, one that didn’t require endless grinding to unlock all its content.

What Mario Kart Tour Complete Could Look Like
A Content-Rich Game That Doesn't Pick Your Pocket
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete provides players with the full game experience offline, including all content previously released for the game (sans licensed material from official collaborations) without any microtransactions. Similarly, a hypothetical Mario Kart Tour Complete could offer its entire lineup of characters and racetracks from the start. With 103 courses, 265 playable characters, and thousands of kart and glider combinations, Tour offers more content than any other game in the series.
Nintendo has also promised an additional year of content after the release of Pocket Camp Complete, and Tour could follow suit as well. Despite its dizzying number of included courses, Tour includes none pulled from Mario Kart 8. Since several original tracks from Mario Kart Tour have been ported to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via DLC, it seems only fair to bring some back the other way.

Mario Kart Tour Characters That Deserve A Mario Kart 9 Roster Spot
Mario Kart Tour's huge selection of characters includes some newcomers to the series that deserve a shot to appear in Mario Kart 9's eventual roster.
There are also new characters that could be added, such as Mario and his friends’ new elephant forms from Super Mario Bros. Wonder. But even without further additions, Mario Kart Tour has more than enough content to justify the price tag for a Complete edition. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete may have paved the road, but Mario Kart Tour has the opportunity to really burn some rubber.
