One of our most popular and delicious gift boxes actually contains a range of our tastiest fruits: Navel Oranges, Red Delicious Apples, and D’Anjou Pears. Why do we love these pears the most? They are in season for most of the year, can be used for many culinary uses, and are always juicy and sweet. Do you want to learn more about D’Anjou Pears? Read on and prepare to order your next box of juicy pears from Florida Indian River Groves.

The Appearance and Seasonality of D’Anjou Pears

Green D’Anjou pears are thought to come from Belgium and to have been introduced to America in about 1842. The pears are easily recognizable by their egg-shaped appearance, with a larger spherical lower portion that tapers up towards a narrow top. Their skin color is bright green, sometimes with a soft red blush. The skin color only changes slightly as the fruit ripens.

The harvest for Green D’Anjou pears begins in the fall, with fresh pears often appearing on shelves in September or October. These pears are in season until about July, so they are at their ripest during Florida Indian River Groves fundraising programs hosted from fall to spring.

These fruits are excellent for many uses, from slicing up into pies or pureeing into sauces or beverages. In fact, chefs often use these pears because of their versatility and year-round availability.

How the Fruit Ripens

Unlike Bartlett pears, which change from green to yellow as they ripen, D’Anjou pears will remain green. You can keep your pears at room temperature to ripen them, which often takes about three to five days. You can also store them in your refrigerator to slow the ripening process.

To check for ripeness, gently press your thumb near the stem. If it gives slightly, the pear is ripe. This is because pears ripen from the inside out – if you wait for the thickest part of the pear to feel soft, your pear will be overripe. Fortunately, overripe pears are excellent for pureeing into a smoothie!

How to Eat D’Anjou Pears

D’Anjou pears can be enjoyed in many ways. This pear is juicy when ripe and has a subtle sweetness with just a hint of a refreshing lemon-lime flavor! Their dense flesh holds up well under heated applications, like baking, poaching, roasting, or grilling. At the same time, they are excellent when sliced fresh and placed in salads or eaten by themselves as a snack.
