Researchers have discovered that AI-powered analysis of heart sensor data from an Apple Watch can identify heart problems, including weakened pumping ability, damaged valves, and thickened muscle. The AI was trained on a vast dataset of 12-lead ECG recordings from over 110,000 adults, focusing on one lead that resembles the ECG on smartwatches. When tested on 600 new participants, the AI achieved an impressive 88% accuracy in distinguishing between individuals with and without heart disease based on smartwatch data.

But here's where it gets controversial: the AI was 86% accurate in identifying heart disease and a whopping 99% accurate in ruling it out. This raises questions about the potential for overdiagnosis or underdiagnosis, a delicate balance in healthcare.

Dr. Arya Aminorroaya, a researcher and internal medicine resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, highlights the current use of smartwatches for detecting heart rhythm issues like atrial fibrillation. But for structural heart diseases, echocardiograms are typically required, which are advanced ultrasound tests not readily available for routine screening.

The researchers plan to further evaluate the AI tool in diverse settings and explore its integration into community-based screening programs. This could potentially revolutionize preventive care, but it also invites discussion on the ethical and practical implications of AI in healthcare.
